about

Formed in Washington, DC, THE EL MANSOURIS is the creative union of Alex Braden (Young Rapids, Bella Russia), Drew Hagelin (Cigarette), Margot MacDonald, Sam Raymond (Rival Skies), Sarah Schaffer (Lies About), and Fiona Kohrman. Their sound often consists of evocative harmonies, left-turn instrumentals, downbeat polyrhythmic grooves, glitched sequences of samples and the occasional synth, all dancing around the meandering interplay of triple female vocals. A finalist in NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, the group made its live debut by playing three consecutive evenings of sold out performances at three unique DC galleries.

"Listening to their forthcoming self-titled debut album, you can hear how these songs would shine in a live setting: They’re performative and outwardly projecting, and the band — a collaboration between local D.C. musicians who all have their own projects (including Margot MacDonald, Young Rapids, and Cigarette) — has a knack for spinning plates that’s reminiscent of Braids and the Dirty Projectors. On lead single “The Greys,” the El Mansouris build to a controlled cacophony, with abrasive harmonies and prickling guitars serving as a foundation for their epic sweep." - Stereogum

"The band have a penchant for colourful musical journeys and such travails are beautifully realised here; the track floating a few feet above the passing day like the most spirited of companions. Following a slow-burning start, “Cat Calls” blossoms through an intricate web of vocals that grow alongside the expanding and ever-endearing instrumental. Swelling in to something all the more prominent by the end of it’s three-minute run, the track is a glorious mesh of influences, the consistently shifting textures providing a kaleidoscopic carnival of wonderment, as palatable as it is infectious." - GoldFlakePaint
